Cake designer. Pastry chef. Professional overthinker of cake.

I’m Joanna, the person behind The Orchid Kitchen, a Yorkshire-based wedding cake studio creating luxury, contemporary and bespoke wedding cakes for couples who want something a little less predictable.

I design and make sculptural, editorial wedding cakes that sit somewhere between food, art and design. Think texture, movement, architecture, unexpected proportions and plenty of attention to the details that make a cake feel like your cake — rather than something pulled from a catalogue.

FROM POLAND TO YORKSHIRE, VIA A LOT OF KITCHENS.

I grew up in Poland before moving to the UK in 2010, studying, travelling and eventually finding my way into professional kitchens.

My background is in hospitality, catering and pastry, including experience working within Michelin-starred kitchens, where I learnt very quickly that good food is rarely about one big dramatic thing. It’s usually about hundreds of tiny details being done properly.

That approach has stayed with me.

I care about the structure of a cake, the texture of a finish, the balance of a flavour and whether the thing actually tastes as good as it looks.

SO, WHAT DO I ACTUALLY BELIEVE?

Cake should taste incredible.

Design should have a reason behind it.

Your wedding shouldn't look like everyone else's.

And luxury doesn't have to mean stiff, serious or painfully formal.

I want the experience of working together to feel personal, straightforward and enjoyable — with plenty of creativity, honest advice and probably a bit of laughter along the way.

Because ultimately, I'm not here to make a luxury wedding cake.
