Heirlooms in Light: A Modern Take on Slavic Lace in Cake Design

There is something quietly powerful about heirlooms. They carry stories, memories, and the invisible fingerprints of the people who came before us. A crocheted tablecloth made by a grandmother, a delicate lace doily resting on a wooden table — objects created with patience, care, and time.
Growing up in Poland, these textures were part of everyday life. Lace and crochet appeared in homes everywhere, often handmade and passed down through generations. At the time they felt ordinary, but looking back now, I realise how much beauty lived in those details.
The idea behind “Heirlooms in Light” is about bringing that heritage into the world of contemporary cake design.
Traditional Slavic lace patterns are incredibly intricate — full of rhythm, symmetry, and delicate movement. When translated onto a cake surface, they create texture and depth that feels almost architectural. Instead of reproducing them exactly as they once were, I like to reinterpret them through a modern lens.

This is where metallic elements come in.

Soft champagne gold, brushed silver, or muted pewter tones interact beautifully with lace textures. The metallic finishes catch the light and highlight the detail, creating contrast between something historically soft and something visually modern.
On a wedding cake, this balance feels particularly special. The lace speaks of tradition and craftsmanship, while the metallic styling introduces a contemporary edge. The result is a design that feels elegant, sculptural, and very much at home in modern weddings.
For me, incorporating these elements is also deeply personal. As a cake designer at The Orchid Kitchen, I’m always interested in how design can carry meaning beyond aesthetics. A cake can reference heritage, culture, or personal history while still feeling fresh and relevant.

That’s what excites me about this style of work.

A cake becomes more than a centrepiece — it becomes a conversation between past and present, between hand-crafted tradition and modern styling.

“Heirlooms in Light” is exactly that: a modern celebration of lace, texture, and heritage, reimagined through contemporary cake design.

Sometimes the most beautiful ideas start with something very old — and simply placing it in a new light.
